This study investigates the effect of spatial configuration on users’ visual attention using a physiological approach along the Ziyabari–Habibzadeh axis in Rasht city, across three distinct physical sequences. The study adopted a positivist paradigm and an analytical research design. Data were collected using an eye-tracking device (Tobii TX300) within a simulated street environment developed in Revit, from which extraneous elements were removed to align with the research objectives. The sample comprised 17 students and graduates from the urban design program. Quantitative analyses were performed based on two indicators: mean pupil diameter and gaze fixation. Participants’ pupil-diameter data and gaze fixation indicators were analyzed using statistical tests – including the paired Wilcoxon test, and effect-size analysis. The results indicated that in the first sequence - characterized by an appropriate spatial configuration - the highest mean pupil diameter (2.4 mm) and the highest fixation frequency (45 occurrences) and duration (426 ms) were recorded at intersections. In the second sequence, with moderate configuration, the highest pupil diameter (1.4 mm) and the longest fixation duration (498 ms) were observed in enclosed segments without intersections. However, the highest fixation frequency (42 occurrences) was recorded near the main intersection. In the third sequence, despite a weak spatial configuration, the highest pupil diameter (4 mm)and the greatest fixation frequency (49 occurrences)and duration (558 ms were observed attributed to path curvature and spatial openness.Therefore, optimal spatial configuration does not necessarily lead to greater visual attention, and perceptual qualities may play a more influential role in attracting users’ attention.
